PROGRAMME FOR ELEMENTARY AMI (6-12) TRAINING COURSES
The course is intended to convey Dr. Maria Montessori’s views on how to help the child grow into an integrated being and develop a sense of belonging not only to a family or a nation but to the world.
The content of the Course is as follows:
- Lectures on Montessori child psychology and educational theory and practice
- Reading and studying Dr. Montessori’s books
- Demonstration of materials and activities devised by Dr. Montessori.
- Practice with materials and activities devised by Dr. Montessori.
- Observation in classes led by an AMI directress
- Teaching practice in classes led by an AMI directress
- Written assignments by the students
- Material creation by the students
Lectures
Montessori Child Psychology and Child Development:
The child’s physical development; the radical changes that take place compared to the earlier age group; the psychological development of the child (tendencies/sensitive periods) compared to the earlier stage; and the continued development and growth of the child as a builder of human personality through the use of human tendencies and psychological characteristics specific to this age group.
Montessori Educational Theory:
Reviewing the Human Tendencies and Four Planes of Development: the use of imagination and the special characteristics of the child for exploration with the reasoning mind; the meaning of Cosmic Education and what it offers to the child; freedom and responsibility; the importance and practicalities of going out.
The Development of Language:
Review of language development in the child; the importance of language in developing intelligence and vocabulary; further extensions in reading; language exercises suited to the ‘sensitivities’ of the child of this age group, leading to reading with comprehension, or total reading.
The following items are covered: the story of language, the history of writing, word study, grammar boxes and related classification; from short stories to composition, paragraph structure and composition; appreciation and development of style; logical/sentence analysis; analysis of sentences (simple, compound, complex); and history of literature.
The Development of Mathematics:
Further development of the mathematical mind; indirect preparation leading to abstraction in mathematics; and the purpose and use of mathematical materials.
The following topics are covered: the story of numbers; continuation of the hierarchy of numbers—long multiplication and division; laws of operations; multiples, factors, and divisibility; group division; fractions—both vulgar and decimal and their related operations; squares and cubes of numbers; powers of numbers; bases (other than 10); from squaring to square root; from cubing to cube root; signed numbers; measurements; algebra; and word problems.
Geometry:
Concepts of equality, similarity, and equivalence; exploration with constructive triangles; study of polygons, circles, angles, and lines in all their details; equivalence of plane figures; area and related formulas; volume—from equivalency to the calculation of volume and formulas.
Cosmic Exploration:
Geography, biology, history and music are given as a framework of human needs in the natural and cultural environment and therefore for the child’s exploration.
Items include:
Geography: – throughout – stories, experiments, charts and activities. Creation of the earth. Composition of the earth. The movements of the Earth and their consequences. The work of air/water. People living in different climatic zones. Interdependence of humans in society and economic geography.
Biology: The prepared environment in botany; realisation of the needs of plants. The story of plants—the functions of leaves, roots, stems, flowers, fruits, and seeds, and their varieties; in zoology: story material on animals; examination of body functions; classification of plants and animals; and notes on ecology.
History: The vision of history according to Dr. Montessori. From geology to the coming of life. The first and second time lines of early human beings; the growth of culture. History charts—fundamental needs, research (question) charts, and migration charts. Representation of time.
Music: Listening, movement, singing, instruments, notation, advanced work in rhythm, and the tone bars.
Reading/study of Dr Montessori’s Books
The students are to read books of Dr Montessori and make use of them for both their written work/essays as well as practice with material and related discussions. The following books are compulsory:

Demonstration of Montessori material
Demonstration of the use of Montessori materials set within or against the background of Montessori child psychology; Special characteristics of these materials—as keys to culture, as opposed to didactic materials.
Supervised Practice with Montessori material
Practical sessions are conducted under the supervision of the Director of Training and directed by AMI-qualified staff. A minimum number of practice hours is compulsory, as stated in the AMI Agreement. Whenever possible, more practice hours are recommended.
Observation
Students are required to observe classes with an AMI directress. Daily observations for at least three hours per day should be scheduled over a minimum of five consecutive days to encompass the required minimum number of hours. Students are required to write reports on their observations, which are reviewed and discussed with the Trainer. Training staff may also visit students while they observe to provide direct insights into the observational process in schools.
Teaching Practice
Students are to practice teaching in classes under the supervision of experienced AMI directresses and the trainer(s) of the course. The minimum number of hours is stipulated in the AMI Agreement. The trainer, or a competent AMI pedagogue designated by the trainer, observes the students while they are practice teaching and reviews their progress. A written report is prepared.
Written Work
Each student shall compile a material album (manual) for each area during the course. These albums should include an introduction to each area, a description of each piece of material, the age of the child, and the aims and purposes of the material. The albums are the student’s personal records of the work done during the course. Album work is supervised throughout the year, with a final assessment at the end of the course.
Each student shall compile a theory album containing essays based on Montessori philosophy, as given in the course.
Material making
Under supervision students will also engage in material making. It consists of time-lines and charts for classroom use. All such materials are checked by the Trainer.
